The B.C. Liberal Record - Leading climate change scientists and economists have described B.C.'s climate change plan as the most progressive in North America.
- We passed laws to reduce B.C.'s greenhouse gas emissions by 33% by 2020.
- We introduced Canada’s first tax on pollution. The carbon tax on pollution will fund $1.8-billion in tax cuts and have the equivalent effect on greenhouse gas emissions of taking 800,000 vehicles off the road.
- We've established 57 new parks, 129 conservancies and eight protected areas since 2001.
- We were the first province to join the Western Climate Initiative, which is creating North America's largest regional cap-and-trade system.
The NDP Record
- Leading climate change scientists and economists have condemned the NDP's dishonest, misleading attacks on the revenue-neutral carbon tax.
- David Suzuki said he is “ashamed” of the NDP’s stance on climate change.
- Carole James and the NDP support a hidden carbon tax "at source" that would add up to a $1/litre to the price of fuel. Carole James’ 8-page climate plan released June 2008 explicitly admits they would introduce a “carbon tax at source” (p.4) that consumers will still have to pay
- The NDP plan would scrap over $1 billion in tax cuts for B.C. families.
- Carole James and the NDP voted against legislation for a cap-and-trade system, despite publicly claiming that they support cap-and-trade.
